Apple Watch users already have a fall detection feature, and one such option for iPhone users expands on that. Only this one is concerned with preventing the fall from occurring completely. Known as “Walking Steadiness,” the new feature debuted at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June and has since received widespread attention. It is one of several characteristics that are intended to assist caregivers in providing better care for the elderly in particular. Of course, it will be extremely beneficial to people of all ages as well as children. Walking Steadiness, as the name implies, seeks to assess the balance, stability, and coordination of an iPhone used by seeing how they walk. It accomplishes this by obtaining critical mobility information from the iPhone’s built-in motion sensors. While a result, as the users walk, the technology employs unique algorithms to evaluate their progress. Walking Steadiness, according to Apple, was developed based on real-world data collected through the Apple Heart and Movement Study. It says that the study included more than 1,000,000 participants of all ages and that it is the “biggest data collection ever used to study fall risk in the history of the medical field.” It also mentions that users may even collect everyday actions and surface classifications through the function within their Health app and categorize them as OK, Low, or Very Low using the categories OK, Low, or Very Low. iPhone users will be able to access the feature starting with iOS 15. It will essentially function as long as your iPhone is kept in your lower-leg pocket. Walking on a flat surface will allow it to determine your balance. To determine susceptibility, the feature will look for indicators of limping as well as asymmetrical steps in general. The concept is to issue a pre-emptive warning if a person’s walking pattern shows that they are putting their health at risk. Users who have a better understanding of their fall risk are more likely to take precautionary steps. According to Apple, more than 37 million people require medical attention each year as a result of a slip and fall. Other serious injuries and consequent loss of movement have occurred in several of these instances. With Walking Steadiness, Apple hopes to prevent this issue altogether, which would be beneficial to the user. After introducing the fall detection feature on the Apple Watch, which automatically activates an emergency response if it detects a fall and subsequent immobility, the technology is a natural evolutionary step for Apple in the direction of risk. Steadiness while walking on the iPhone is more of a predictive step than it is a response. Users of iOS 15 who want to set up Walking Steadiness notifications can do so through the Health app on their device. Users will be able to find the option under “Summary” and will be required to submit information such as height, weight, and age to enable the notifications. Once activated, it will take a few days for the function to gather enough information to provide an accurate assessment of your walking pattern. Through Mobility > Walking Steadiness, it will display the progress under the Browse tab in the bottom right corner of the screen. It is important to understand that if your Walking Steadiness score is low, you are at risk of falling. The Health app then provides exercise videos that can be used as preventative steps to minimize the risk. At this stage, you can, of course, seek expert assistance as well.
